Without our interventions, they would revert back to the condition of their wild ancestors, and it would be impossible to live with them.
In effect, we’re saying that they’re incapable of learning (even though life in the wild would be very short indeed if animals were truly incapable of learning).
While we cannot teach self-control directly, we can enable the dog to learn it by providing safe and reinforcing contexts.
