Stephen Neal is a Live Multicamera Studio Director for BBC Studios. His day job is directing The One Show, but every year he puts on his Eurovision hat as the UK Transmission Director for our Song Contest.

He started his Eurovision Transmission role in 2013, and as the Contest returns to Malmö, Ewan sits down with Stephen to talk about his work bringing the Song Contest to air.

Three issues that the UK community will be aware of in the broadcast include warnings about flashing lights and moving images, how public voting is promoted during the show, and the curious lack of sponsors on the BBC broadcast compared to the official YouTube stream. Neal goes into depth about why these are in place, how they get there, and why they are a key part of the BBC’s mission to serve every member of the public.

Stephen was also involved in the planning stages of Liverpool 2023, where his Eurovision knowledge helped shape the technical details of the BBC’s broadcast of the Contest. As part of a huge team working on the show, he considered the technical script, the logistics, and the various back-ups required to get on the air.
