The show’s host, Lindsay Williams, presents individual features that are aimed to broaden the target audience and distinguish FBR from the present clutch of shows that follow similar formats, and that target the same interviews, with the same people, on the same night. FBR will broadcast from the Artscape theatre complex, Monday to Friday, 6-7pm. While there’ll be absolutely NO disadvantages resulting from being in the Cape, there will be so many pluses. The big brains and the big bucks are all here. Lindsay will have the pick of the institutional money managing talent and an increasing number of brokers who will populate our prestigiously positioned studios. A WORD FROM LINDSAY ….. “A bewildering array of business and news programmes assault us all day, with a noisy crescendo being reached during the early evening. I’d like to think that we at FBR have distinguished ourselves somewhat by making what is (quite frankly) a potentially tedious subject, a little more lively, accessible and entertaining. One of the many things that irritate me as a journalist and broadcaster is being shackled, whether it be by the big cheeses upstairs, or by my own inertia. There has long been a perception that business and financial stuff should be treated with reverence, and punctuated with jargon and clichés. ‘EBITDA’ is a classic example of the type of nonsense that makes me want to chuck it all in and open a pub up the West Coast. Why do the smug suits assume that the listener knows that it stands for ‘earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortisation’. Then there’s EBIT-A, but don’t get me started. Business is a serious business. Markets affect all our lives every day in some way, and I’ll carry on reporting the big stories that matter and talk to the top names behind those stories. The difference is I’ll be assuming nothing, and if the interviewee gets too technical, I’ll gently ask for plain language please before the listener switches to Egoli. There’ll be no dumbing down the subject, but more of my usual forthright goal of entertaining, educating, and informing, and across all levels. Jeremy Clarkson’s is the closest to my ideal presentation style. Motoring programmes of yesteryear were essentially made to satisfy the irritating bloke next door who spent his Sunday mornings with his head stuck under the bonnet and who made me look stupid in front of the family. Clarkson has taken a subject, again one that can be tedious as all hell, and made it terrifically interesting and at the same time highly entertaining. There you have it. That’s what I’m going to do with Fine Business Radio. Serious stuff with a hint of humanity.”
