Having rose through the ranks at the famous FC St. Pauli, and helping them promote to the first bundesliga, Ivan transferred an hour southwest to Werder Bremen. There, he was a pivotal piece in a very successful period for the white and green; including a winning the battle for the double (Bundesliga & Pokal) at the end of the 2003-04 season. He would also join the Croatian national team at two European Championships and the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Off the field, Ivan would face his greatest and most challenging battle. In 2007, Ivan would have two kidney transplants, one from his mother and then one from his father.
