God’s Word For Today

Text: Mark 10:17-22 (ESV)

17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

YOU LACK ONE THING

A man ran and knelt before Jesus and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answers with a question, “Why do you call me good?” Jesus explained that no one is good except God alone. Definitely, the man has either a vague or wrong idea of good.

Although Jesus knows his heart, He starts to cross-examine Him. He asked, “You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” These questions were intended for the man to realize his need to be humble and recognize his covetousness.

But, he was proud. In a show of much self-righteousness, he said, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” He is a moral person. His relationship with others is admirable. He respects others as the golden rule says.

Jesus did not comment on his claim is affirming. He looked and loved him as a man needing help. Jesus wants to rescue him from his covetousness. He says, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” But, he was disheartened. He went away sorrowful. Why? As a rich guy, he won’t give up his possessions. He did not believe and followed Jesus. His possessions are more important to him than Jesus.

Simply put, he wants to inherit eternal life on his own terms. He thinks his goodness was enough for him to merit eternal life. Before people, he was morally right but gripped with covetousness in his heart. A person who is acceptable before God is he who is broken and contrite – he who is poor in spirit.[Matt 5:2]
