Your Heard Tell Show for Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023 is turning down the noise of the news cycle and getting to the information we need to discern our times by returning to the story of the Marion, Kansas newspaper that was raided by local law enforcement now that the chief of police has resigned, been caught lying and deleting evidence, and how good reporting and social media attention has turned the tide of an abuse of power story. Attorney and Ordinary Times Senior Editor Em Carpenter returns to Heard Tell to talk about the bonkers first day of Donald Trump's NY civil trial for business fraud, lawsplains why this is a bench trial with no jury and whether or not that was on purpose or a mistake, and how to parse through bad legal takes and coverage in complicated, high-profile cases. Then, our scientist friend and spacecraft flier Dr. Michael Siegel returns to talk about the return of NASA's real life "Armageddon" mission that returned samples from an asteroid back to Earth, and yes, we use lots of references and jokes from the movie to explain science, space, and physics of some really cool space tech. Plus, as an academic, we ask Michael about the ongoing "men thinking about Rome" meme to his hilarious and surprising reaction before getting the real history and reasons why the Roman Empire still captures attention and imaginations. We end on a good note, with a company that will be producing the merchandise for West Virginia's biggest one day festival by helping out their own extraordinary employees.
