Since 2009, California has taken a deep dive into prison reform passing measures starting with AB109, Proposition 47, Proposition 57, etc. all geared to change the way that crime is managed and how the criminal is held accountable. Through these efforts, the State has moved those inmates who have committed crimes that were deemed “non-violent“ and “non-serious“ to serve time in County jails, leaving only the most serious and violent offenders to serve their sentences in California prisons. Now, however, the state is closing prisons, several of them, at a record pace. What does this mean for the dangerous inmates who are serving time in these prisons and where will they go? And what does this mean for California whose crime rate continues to skyrocket? The victims’ voices have not been heard in all of these policy decisions. I will be joined by Michael Ramos, former District Attorney of San Bernardino County, and Paul Cappitelli, a Retired Sheriff’s Captain and former Executive Director for the California Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Commission (POST) to discuss prison reform, crime, and what is really happening behind the curtain.
