Recently, I was helping a single mom look after her kids after school so she could work late. She was grateful and said that while many others know her situation, nobody else has offered help. This shocks and saddens me. We’re supposed to be the church and this is where I think “how can this happen”, “we should all be more willing to be involved in each other’s lives”… BUT I recognize this is easy for me to say because I’m an extrovert, I love the idea of close-knit community, I’m willing to disrupt our family rhythms for the sake of helping someone, that's my image of honouring christ. What about people who aren’t like me though? I want to tell others to follow my example and love others by giving up their time to show love to each other, but can I really ask this of say an introvert, or perhaps someone deeply aware of their family’s need for regular rhythm. Maybe that's their way of honouring christ. There are likely people out there looking at me and saying the same “I wish they would follow my example”
… so my question is: As a people varied in gifting and valuing different things, how do we encourage the church to be the church? How do we spur on one another towards love and good deeds, but still respect each other’s strengths and gifts and also respect each other’s limitations?
