Hello and thank you for listening to Day 68 of Praying Against Evictions. Here is a link to the story I talked about today https://www.wxyz.com/news/region/detroit/detroiters-protest-munoz-realty-to-complain-about-what-theyre-calling-substandard-rental-units-as-eviction-rise
As I reread the story, I discovered something. Tonya Myers Phillips is an attorney. She’s the director of community partnerships and development at the Sugar Law Center in Detroit and the project leader with the Detroit Right to Counsel Coalition fighting for low-income tenants to have a right to legal representation in eviction proceedings. She literally told the tenants how to get some more time.
Although this may not work if you are already in a case, if it's a case of negligence, follow her advice below.
“Call building and safety. Make a report to the city. Withhold your rent. Doing those kinds of things does trigger the retaliation law as protection. If you’ve complained to the city as in this example, and within 90 days of that complaint the landlord gives you the notice to evict you, well you’re protected,” said Phillips.#
I am praying for an equitable solution where neither the landlord nor the tenant is burned through this process. Pay the landlords. We need to get the economy back rolling and no one is going to work if they are on the streets. Pay the landlords. #theapartmentlady
