In 2 Samuel 19:9-10, after the defeat of Absalom, the people of Israel are in turmoil, debating who should reign over them. They recall how David was previously their deliverer, and there is confusion about why they had not reinstated him as king.
When God Appoints:
Purposeful Calling: When God appoints someone, it is with a clear purpose. David was chosen by God to lead Israel, not just because of his strength but because he was a man after God's heart (1 Samuel 13:14). His appointment was grounded in a divine mission to fulfill God’s promises to Israel.
Sustained by Grace: God’s appointment is sustained by His grace, even in the face of adversity. Despite David’s exile and the rebellion of his son Absalom, God’s hand remained upon him. There were periods of suffering and doubt, but God's favor never left David.
Long-Term Vision: God's appointments often have a long-term impact. David’s kingship wasn’t just about his lifetime; it was part of God's larger plan to bring about the lineage of Christ. When God appoints, He sees beyond the present moment and ensures that His plans will endure.
When Men Appoint:
Short-Sighted Choices: Men often appoint leaders or people to positions based on immediate needs, appearances, or emotions. Absalom’s popularity was based on his physical appearance and charisma, but it lacked the divine backing that David had. It was a decision rooted in what seemed right in the moment.
Insecurity and Uncertainty: When appointments are made by human decision without divine guidance, they are often unstable. Absalom’s reign was marked by insecurity, and though he won the hearts of some, his rule didn’t last because it wasn’t part of God’s plan.
The Outcome of God’s Appointment:
David’s return to power was orchestrated by God, not man. Though he was rejected, betrayed, and even replaced by his own son, God’s plan for David to reign remained unshaken. Eventually, the people recognized that the king they had anointed (Absalom) was dead, and they needed to restore David, whom God had chosen. This shows that God's appointment stands firm, regardless of what men do.
In conclusion, God's appointment brings purpose, sustainability, and divine favor, while man's appointment often results in instability, division, and short-lived success. When God appoints, His plans always prevail.
