On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. The natural elements, perceived naturalness, and restorative qualities of natural environments are more than what's visible to the naked eye. From the buzzing of insects to the sounds of the thunder, nature has its own rhythm that can touch the deepest core. By aligning with the elemental forces and rhythm of nature, one can find stillness beyond the rhythms of the body, mind, and emotions. #poem #LafzbyGarima #hindipoetry #hindipoem #spotify #poetry #words #writing…
While loneliness is an unwanted and forced isolation, solitude can be restorative. In a world that often values constant activity, 'Suno Zara' captures the importance of spending time in one's own company and inner exploration for well-being and growth. It poignantly reminds us to make time for self-care and discovering oneself. #LafzbyGarima #podcast #poetry #hindi #poem #spotify…

A devotee's ardent plea, an invocation to the Almighty to relieve him from every facet of life except those that bind him to His will, His effulgence, infinite magnificence and immeasurable mercy. The poem identifies the attachment to the self as a formidable barrier in the spiritual path and pleads with the Almighty to help get over the notional lure of the ego. In the Almighty's grand scheme of things, all his beings are but mere characters in a book authored by only HIM. The characters have little control over themselves, leave alone on their co-characters on how their roles would expand, contract, metamorph or develop in the story of their lives. And yet in their puppet-like existence within the pages of the book, occasionally they sense themselves flung away from the creator's strings and have to cope for themselves. While this might give them a temporary feeling of being master of their own destinies, its is actually the Masters' desire for a character or soul to eke out a struggle through the maze of life and find the true purpose of its existential dilemma. Due to our innate nature, we don't value things that are given in abundance to us. "Breath" is what separates us from the deceased. We regrettably take it for granted. Once we start paying attention to each breath, we recognize its infinite potential. It's something that our ancient yogis and philosophers discovered long back. Pranayama is the regulation of the breath through certain techniques and exercises such as kapalbhati, ujjayi, bhastrika, nadi-shuddhi, etc. Life is breath...breath is life. Keep breathing... #lafzbygarima #poetry #poem #meditation #yoga #pranayama #hindipoetry…
This nostalgia-driven piece presents the reader with a metaphorical riddle - a sentimental memory of a child losing 10 paisa coins (dassi) received from her father, and an unending search for it all her life. What does that dassi represent? Life lessons? Principles? Values? The answer to that hinges as much on the readers' interpretation and experience as on what the poetry intended. What precious sentiments and teachings have each one of us lost it in the melee of life? (Description credit: Subash Sangam) #LafzByGarima #poem #hindi #poetry #podcast…

She comes in widely diffused plethora of colors, forms, actions, traits and looks-- deceptive they are, because deep within, she breathes in, every moment from the same melting pot of womanhood! Running through the universal sisterhood is a straight line of similar dreams and nightmares, toss of confidence and diffidence, challenges and opportunities alike. A good portion of her being and alter-being is less a short story -- and more a never ending saga of love, struggles and will power that spans milleniums. #intlwomensday #womensday2022 #poem #spotify #poetry #podcast #hindi #hindipoetry #poetrypodcast #writingcommunity #writer #poetess #podcasters #words #applepodcast…
