Manage episode 440742764 series 3381982
Alex Marrable, Director at Tutorsplus, joined Katt Cullen on the WRS Breakfast Show to share insights on how to set children up for success at the start of the new school year.
Alex explained how to build students’ confidence as well as help them get better grades. "The goal is to empower children," she said, "so they feel confident tackling new challenges and know they have the tools to succeed, but it is easier said than done."
Alex's key tip is to get in early to help with academically weak areas before confidence is lost. "Our teachers are all certified and experienced in their field so they know how to help get a child doing their best work. Many are also examiners in the IB, IGCSE and A Level, so know just how to target support so that students can best prepare for their exams."
She stressed the importance of creating a positive environment, both at home and in school. This can mean celebrating small achievements, she said "It’s crucial to recognise and celebrate successes, no matter how minor they may seem. This boosts confidence and helps children stay motivated."
By acknowledging these wins, parents can help reinforce a positive learning mindset. For children who may struggle academically, she emphasises that the focus should be on effort and progress, rather than just grades. "It’s not just about the results," she explained, "but about recognizing the hard work and perseverance that lead to improvement."
Another key point was the need for strong communication between students, parents, and teachers. Alex recommended that parents maintain regular contact with their child’s teachers to ensure that children receive the support they need.
She noted, "Communication is vital. The more we can create a dialogue between home and school, the better equipped children are to overcome any challenges." This collaboration helps address issues early and ensures that students feel supported from all sides.
Katt and Alex explored the impact of positive reinforcement on long-term academic success. "Sometimes, it’s the small steps that matter most," Alex remarked. This approach not only strengthens a child’s academic abilities but also contributes to their overall emotional well-being during the often stressful back-to-school period.
For parents navigating this time, her advice is clear: support your child by maintaining open communication, celebrating their efforts, and offering professional help when needed. In doing so, you create a nurturing environment that sets them up for academic success and personal growth.
