On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. Money is one of the top sources of stress! In this episode, I spoke with Certified Financial Planner Righetti Joseph about the ‘4 money scripts’. The money scripts are 4 concepts in behavioral finance that explain our attitude towards money and how it impacts the decisions that we make regarding money. The goal is to correct our attitude regarding money so that we can nurture the adolescents in our care to have a healthy view about their finances. In this episode, I talk about the four negative defaults referred to in the book The Strength Switch by Lea Waters (Get the book!). These negative defaults can have a detrimental effect on the way parent, educate or lead children, youth and early career professionals...in fact anyone. The four defaults are 1) Selective Attention 2) Negativity Bias 3) Projection and 4) Binary Thinking. Let's work on becoming consciously positive. The world has enough problems on its own. In this episode, I discuss the differences between the Deficit-based model and a strengths-based/asset-based model. Deficit-based thinking asks “What is wrong with her?" Strengths-based thinking asks “what is right with her?” Research has shown that focusing on strengths promotes a mental lift that propels the individual towards continued development. Enjoy the show! It’s another season of Live EPIC: Youth Development & Leadership. In this episode, I introduce the concept of Strengths Based Approach to youth development based on the pioneering work of Don Clifton the founder of Strengths Finder. According to Mary Reckmeyer, author of Strengths Based Parenting, a strength is the result of taking that talent and with investment – skills, knowledge and practice – using it to consistently provide near-perfect performance in a given activity eg analyzing information. This is an introductory episode into the benefits of focusing on strengths. Research has indicated that a sense of belonging is a resilience factor. This episode covers how you can develop belonging among youth at home/school/work. Deloitte published an article for their 2021 Human Capital Trends which noted that “Seventy-nine percent of organizations say fostering a sense of belonging in the workforce is important or very important for their success over the next 12 to 18 months, but only 13 percent say they are very ready to address this trend.” [1] Are you the 13% or the 87%? This episode focuses on Suicide. Some call it a major public health crisis and I agree. This week is Suicide Awareness Week (September 5-11). It is a time to bring awareness to suicide and how we can respond to and prevent among our friends, family and colleagues. According to the CDC, in 2019 suicide was the second leading cause of death for persons 10 to 34 years old. I put on my Mental Health First Aider hat for this episode and I hope that it helps you to save a life. #LIVEEPIC Segue Music by 1tamara2 from Pixabay [Chillout 103-4327] & GoodBMusic from Pixabay [Called to Win] Intro & Outro Music by Asepirawan20 from Pixabay [Upbeat 4482]…
