The water level in Suicide Basin is rising quickly after the recent Mendenhall River flood, potentially posing another risk to Juneau. City officials are working with the Army Corps of Engineers and the National Weather Service to monitor the situation and plan flood mitigation efforts.

Eric Hafner, currently imprisoned for threatening public officials, will appear on Alaska’s U.S. House ballot this November. Despite his lack of ties to Alaska and being incarcerated in New York, Hafner joins the final four candidates, including frontrunners Mary Peltola and Nick Begich.

Alaska’s libraries are facing severe challenges after a key state grant was unexpectedly slashed by 75%. The cuts are hitting smaller libraries the hardest, with some at risk of closing. Communities are scrambling to find ways to keep these essential services open.

Alaska is in its 12th straight year of population decline, largely due to reduced migration and an aging population. Experts are concerned about long-term trends, with fewer new residents arriving and employers increasingly relying on foreign workers to meet demand in key industries.
