The Dumbing Down of Leaders
Manage episode 444207028 series 3574193
During the early 1900s, the subjects taught in High School were much different than today. Greek, Latin, Math (without calculators), and Handwriting, just to name a few were expectations. If you didn't pass the required courses, you didn't graduate. Fast forward to today and we now offer remedial English and Math in college. Several other important lessons such as accountability, problem-solving, self-discipline, and simply showing up seem to be less important than making sure that everyone gets a blue ribbon, or a pass to the next level whether it is earned or not. After all, we don't want to leave anyone behind even if they failed to put in any effort at all. It just wouldn't be fair.
So how does this impact today's leaders? Global statistics show that 75% of all leaders are failing. Other studies show that less than 10% of all leaders have the ability to lead effectively. Is there a correlation between failing leadership and the dumbing down of the education system?
Rich and Maikel discuss why hard lessons are important in leadership development in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.
