In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “New Order”. In the early 80’s Joy Division was formed with lead singer Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitars, synthesizers), Peter Hook (bass, backing vocals), and Stephen Morris (drums, electronic drums, synthesizers). The group disbanded after the untimely death of Ian. The remaining members formed a new group, called “New Order”. “New Order” was considered a rock band but they actually were a fusion of post-punk, new wave and electronic music. One of their breakthrough singles was “Blue Monday” which is regarded as one of the most influential songs in EDM. Take a listen to it here. “Blue Monday” was known for its electronic instruments being showcased such as the use of pulsating synth basslines, catchy melodies and programmed drum beats.
