Like a lot of children, I fell in love with drums at an early age. My first drum was a Folgers coffee can that I would beat into oblivion. I think my drumming is why my parents started taking high blood pressure medicine.
When I was around eight years old, I started playing our metal trash cans. We had two cans, and our neighbor would let me borrow her two cans. There was a fire hydrant in the corner of our yard, so I placed the trash cans around the hydrant and put one trash can lid on top of it to use as a cymbal.
A couple of years later, my parents decided to surprise me with a small drum set at Christmas. They knew they couldn’t wrap it and keep it a secret, so they told us they were going to put the tree in front of a different window and would need to make a box stand to put it on, which of course, was secretly my drum set. I admired the Christmas lights every day and dreamed of getting a drum set. On Christmas Day, after all the gifts had been opened, Dad lifted the aluminum tree off the box stand and told me to open the box. There was my drum set! Wow! What a great Christmas!
Sometimes, it can be hard to see the wonderful gifts all around, because we’re distracted by bright lights and commercialism. In reality, the greatest gifts of all may not be store-bought items. Maybe it's a cup of hot chocolate with a dear friend, or a telephone call to someone to tell them how much you appreciate them. Most importantly, in this special season, let’s make sure the cross is lifted higher than the Christmas tree...high enough for everyone to see.
Merry Christmas, my friends!
