Adin Dobkin, the author of Sprinting Through No Man's Land," a book about the 1919 Tour de France, explains how the world's great bike race has its origins in the Dreyfus Affair. Two newspapers. One with an editor who believed sports and politics could not be separated and wanted a new trial for the railroaded Army officer. as a result, advertisers fled. The other editor, Henri Desgrange, believed sports and politics should not be combined. He stayed away from the Dreyfus Affair and advertisers followed.
