May 5, 2024 ~ Host Ann Thomas talks to Elana Rugh, president and CEO of the Detroit Historical Society, about the new exhibits and events at the Detroit Historical Museum. One of the upcoming events includes the Detroit Historical Society Ball: A Salute to the Legends, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on May 11, which will honor Detroit legends in media and sports. This year's honorees include Greg Kelser, Michigan State/Detroit Pistons player and sports broadcaster, Huel Perkins television anchor, and Mickey Redmond, NHL player and Red Wings announcer. The Kresge Foundation will also open the Kresge at 100: A Century of Impact, a Future of Opportunity exhibit on May 4, with the main exhibit featuring a company and foundation timeline of the Kresge store. The Kresge Foundation is sponsoring free admission on the second Sunday of every month during the run of the exhibition, through January of 2025. Another exhibit at the museum will be In the Neighborhood: Everyday Life on Hastings Street, which will take visitors on a walk back in history to Hastings Street’s time from 1880-1930 as an enclave for Detroit’s Jewish immigrants. Prior to 1930, Hastings Street, which later became a center for Black culture and commerce, was home to many immigrants, including working-class Jews who fled Eastern Europe driven by the terror and violence of antisemitism. This new exhibit, presented by Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, follows Jewish immigrants’ experiences from Europe to Detroit on Hastings Street.
