55:46Part 1: We talk with Ethan Varian, reporter based in San Francisco. We discuss how wealthy individuals hire and retain private fire fighters. However, most of the fire fighters are hired by insurance companies for fire mitigation and prevention in high end homes. Coordination with local municipal fire fighters is required, but not always implemented. Part 2: We talk with David Schleicher, Professor of Property and Urban Law at Yale Law School. We discuss how property taxes are assessed, and how they are burdensome to homeowners. Property taxes are a wealth tax on an asset that are used to fund many things, including schools. However, the fairness is questionable, and many homeowners are objecting to this kind of taxation. Proposition 13 in California has distorted the housing market as a result. Property taxes in Texas are also problematic. We discuss why this is. WNHNFM.ORG production Music: David Rovics, "Time to Act", for Will Von Sproson…

56:23Part 1: We talk with Mark Joseph Stern, from Slate.com We discuss the Laken Riley Bill, an anti-immigration bill that has a huge impact on how immigrants will be treated. It provides for indefinite detention and deportation for people who may be legally in the country, for no reason than that someone has accused them of some illegal action. Its applies to minors. It allows local police and local judges to make decisions that should be made on a national level. It can bring about travel bans against whole countries because of suspicions about one individual who may be departed back to his/her home country, despite that country not accepting that. Part 2: We talk with Peter Greene, who writes for Forbes. We discuss how religion has been taken over by the state. This is true in Louisiana, where religious statements are mandated by the state in public schools. Specifically, the state's version of the ten commandments must be posted in public schools, including pictures of Mike Johnson and Moses, as equivalent authorities. This takeover of religion, and subsuming it into the politics has destroyed the previously observed of the separation of church and state. No other religions besides evangelical christianity is represented. WNHNFM.ORG production Music: David Rovics, "Time to Act", for Will Von Sproson…

57:40Part 1: We talk with Joe Jaworski, the son of Leon Jaworski, Joe was the former Mayor of Galveston TX, he ran for AG in 2022 lost in the democratic runoff. We discuss Texas politics, and specifically, the actions of the current AG, Ken Paxton. Paxton has been attacking fellow Republicans in Texas who have not bowed to his wishes. and who do not agree about who should lead the Texas House. Currently, Texas is a dangerous place to live for both citizens and immigrants. This is due to the draconian laws that have been passed recently, and also to the impending problems that will occur if many undocumented workers are deported: They pay taxes locally, and many cities and counties will lose that income. Additionally, many people are being sued or sent to prison as a result of new regulations and laws being implemented. Part 2: We talk with Harold Meyerson and Bill Curry. Bill Curry was a Connecticut state senator, comptroller and two time Democratic nominee for governor who served as Counselor to the President in the Clinton White House. He has written for Salon, the Daily Beast, the HuffingtonPost and the HartfordCourant and has provided commentary on National Public Radio, MSNBC and many other news outlets. Harold MeyersonSince 2001, Harold Meyerson has been an editor of The American Prospect, the Washington-based liberal magazine, oscillating between the positions of Editor at Large and Executive Editor (his current post). We discuss the California fires and Trump's response to the disasters. We also discuss the new reality: truth no longer matters, only the misinformation that is promulgated by Republicans. We also discuss what Democrats should be doing to mitigate this problem. There seems to be a vanishing Democratic resistance to Trump. 55:38This is a panel discussion Our panel is Laura Jedeed, independent journalist, Stephen Pimpare, law faculty member at Vermont, and Bill Curry, writer, former aide to Bill Clinton, anti-nuclear activist. -We begin our discussion about the threatened deportations of immigrants . These individuals currently contribute $100 B to Social Security, and will NOT get any of that money back. In addition, many jobs now being done by these immigrants will likely not be done at all. -Republicans are beginning to splinter with themselves. The populists do not agree with fiscal conservatives. -It is important to note that the blame placed on immigrants is wrong. Most drugs are brought in by citizens. -We discuss the aging of lawmakers. Case in point: Kay Granger (R-TX). -Democrats must develop a bench of new office-holder entrants that represent the voters. 58:00This is a repeat of a previously aired program. Originally aired: November 15 2024 Friday Part 1: We talk with Ryan Cooper, the Managing Editor of The American Prospect. We discuss the election and how Texan Latinos voted. We talk about the contributions that migrants make to the Texas and US economies. Part 2: We talk with Bill Curry and Jeff Sharlet. Curry is a former WH aide to Bill Clinton, and Sharlet is a professor at Dartmouth College. We discuss the choices that Trump is making for his cabinet. We also talk about whether we are now living in a democracy or a regime. Trump has signaled that he would like to use the military against the civilian US population. Also, rather than the US 'going back' to some previous state of government, the goal seems to be to impose a new order, that eliminates the two party system and free voting. How can this be countered? WNHNFM-ORG production…

55:04Part 1: We talk with Mary Ziegler, Law Professor at Cal State Davis, and reproductive law expert. We discuss AG (Tx) Ken Paxton's suit regarding prescription drugs furnished by a New York physician to a Texas woman to provide abortion. New York has a shield law to prevent this. It appears that Paxton believes that Texas laws against abortion should be enforced by New York. This is also a furtherance of the "personhood" of a zygote or fetus argument. Part 2: We talk with Bill Curry and Robert Hennelly. We discuss New York's push to force about 250,000 retired NY civil service workers to use United Health Care instead of the contracted health insurance as was bargained for by the unions that represent these former workers. A court issued a "promissory estoppel" to prevent this. We discuss how the United Health Care and other insurance companies plans that promise to replace and improve on Medicare are much inferior. We also discuss how the Democratic Party needs to restructure itself to be more responsive to voters' needs. WNHNFM.ORG production Music: David Rovics, "Time to Act", for Will Von Sproson…

55:23Part 1: We talk with Alex Sammon, Politics writer for Slate.com. We discuss the state of the Democratic party, and what needs to be done to make it more responsive to voters. There should be a "changing of the guard", specifically to feature younger representatives. We also discuss Nancy Pelosi's relationship with Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, and how decisions are made to appoint committee chairs and members. The idea of pardoning Trump has been raised by a Democrat, and we discuss this issue. Part 2: We talk with Simon Lazarus, former Associate Director for Domestic Policy, under Jimmy Carter. We discuss the various proposals to change or eliminate the Electoral College in favor of more direct elections. Mr. Lazarus discusses how this is likely not feasible, since this would mean amending the Constitution. Instead, he proposes the elimination of the "winner take all electoral votes" in those states that have this pattern. Instead, he proposes that all electoral votes be counted for whichever candidate has them. This is true only for a few states now. We also discuss how candidates should clearly define their 'enemies' during the campaigns to more clearly delineate these for the voters. We discuss how tax policy has been influenced by the very rich to benefit themselves. We also discuss the outrageous and unfair sentence handed down to Charles Littlejohn, who leaked Trump's tax information. freecharleslittlejohn.com, a web site to show protest at this sentence. Part 2: We talk with Danielle Lee Thomson, Research Manager for CIP election Rumor Research Team. We discuss with Danielle her latest paper, which describes how the right wing uses theatrics, particularly the tools of IMPROV, to present their their talking points. This strategy of using alternative media, instead of conventional news channels is very effective, because it is presented as entertainment, and viewers do not think as critically of the message as a result. Truth fragments are distorted to present their message. WNHNFM.ORG production Music: David Rovics, "Time to Act", for Will Von Sproson…
