Welcome to The Daily Quote—a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and today is October 27th.

Today is National Mentoring Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the importance of mentors in our lives. Whether you're lucky enough to have a mentor or you've taken on the responsibility of being one, this day reminds us how powerful those relationships can be.

Mentors shape us, challenge us, and at times, even give us that reality check we didn't know we needed. In the spirit of that, today’s quote comes from MMA legend Frank Shamrock, and it’s a simple yet profound way to approach growth, whether in sports, business, or life in general. He said:

"Each fighter, to become great, needs to have someone better that they can learn from, someone lesser who they can teach, and someone equal that they can challenge themselves against."

Shamrock’s idea, known as "plus, minus, and equal," perfectly captures the power of mentoring from every angle. It’s not just about learning from someone more experienced than you, though that’s incredibly valuable. It’s also about surrounding yourself with peers who challenge you to stay sharp, and giving back by mentoring others to ensure the cycle continues.

To be the best, you’ve got to have one mentor who’s better than you, one who’s equal to you, and one who you’re mentoring.

On a day like today, maybe ask yourself: Do you have all three? That "plus" person who pushes you to new heights, the "equal" who keeps you on your toes, and the "minus" who you can guide, just as you were once guided. If not, maybe it’s time to find them—or become them. After all, growth isn’t a solo sport. It’s a team effort.

So, whether you're a seasoned mentor or just starting to think about passing on some wisdom, remember: you never stop learning, and the more you give, the more you grow.

And that’s it for today! Thanks for joining me for another day and I hope this little reminder leaves you thinking about the power of mentorship as you go about your day.

I'm Andrew McGivern signing off for today but I'll see you tomorrow for another Daily Quote.
