I’m so excited to share my love of Emily Brontë with you by diving into what she might have been like during her lifetime. While we only have a few surviving writings by her, including her single novel Wuthering Heights, from these tidbits Emily has often been cast as the wild child of the Brontë family. Once you’ve listened to today’s episode, you might want to watch Kate Bush’s music video for her song “Wuthering Heights.”

[2:59] “One of the family servants described her as preferring the company of pets to people and that she had ‘the eyes of a half-tamed creature.’”

[11:17] “What we do know for sure is that Emily was so angry at Charlotte for this intrusion into her privacy that she didn’t speak to her sister for days.”

[13:20] “But often Hollywood only portrays 16 of the novel’s 34 chapters, leaving out a whole lot of plot!”

Books mentioned in this episode:

  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
  • Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
  • The Poems of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell
