Philip was born in Bethsaida in Galilee and was one of the 12 Apostles that Jesus called. Immediately, Philip began to convert others, finding his friend Nathaniel and telling him that Jesus was the one whom Moses and the other prophets had foretold.

James the Lesser is called “Lesser” because he was younger than the other Apostle by the same name, James the Great. James the less was related in some way to Jesus, and after Jesus’ Ascension into heaven, he became the head of the Church in Jerusalem. He was martyred in the year 62.

Today, on May 3 as our Church celebrates the Feast of Philip and James, Apostles, a reading from the treatise On the Prescription of Heretics by Tertullian, priest.

Tertullian was a priest and a prolific second century Christian author from Carthage in the Roman province of Africa. He was the first Christian author to produce an extensive corpus of Latin Christian literature. He was an early Christian apologist and a polemicist against heresy.

His most famous quotes include: “Nature soaks every evil with either fear or shame”, “Hope is patience with the lamp lit”, “The blood of martyrs is the seed of the church”.
