Conversos or Crypto-Jews
The title refers to early Spanish settlers to the American southwest, many to northeastern New Mexico. Ferdinand and Isabella gave the Jews the option of conversion to Christianity or exile. Suspicion lingered, however, that many among the converts continued to practice “the Dead Law of Moses” secretly while hoping to avoid the third option offered by the Inquisition.
