Death is unfair. It takes from us our family and friends regardless of how much they’re needed or loved. In this resurrection miracle, we see God’s heart for us when ours is broken, how He meets us in our pain, and in the end, what He intends to do with life’s greatest losses. It’s a message of hope for the hurting but it’s more than that. It’s also a picture of what Christ Himself did for all of us. Join us in our countdown to Easter as we lean into the resurrection miracles in the gospels and discover the hope they bring into our lives today.

SERIES | Jesus Ruins Funerals

Losing a loved one is stressful enough then planning the funeral of a loved one adds even more stress. I love Jesus but He sure knows how to mess up a funeral. Think about it. You’ve paid the funeral home. Bought the cemetery plot and casket. You’ve invited all the guests then Jesus shows up and wrecks the whole plan in a wonderfully glorious way. In the days leading up to Easter, we’re going to spend some time examining how Jesus responds to death. This is a series full of hope about what Jesus will one day do for all of us, too.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. What was your first experience with death? How did it affect you? Who was there to comfort you? How was death explained to you?

2. Compassion, as Pastor Keith shared, is more than a feeling. It’s an action. Compassion compels us to do something about whatever has captured our hearts. How has compassion for someone or some circumstance compelled you to do something more than feel the pain of those involved?

3. Re-read this resurrection account again in the Bible (Luke 7.11-17). What did you learn about this story? What stands out most to you? How does this story challenge you? Encourage you? Build your faith? Put yourself in the shoes of this widow and try to imagine what she was feeling before and after this miracle. Describe that transformation. Now imagine that time when we all stand in the presence of God and He does this restoration of life and relationship for each and every one of us. There’s coming a time when our losses will also be reversed – a time of restoration – because resurrection life is our guaranteed future. What does that day mean to you?

4. Miracles are previews of coming attractions. Evidence of what God intends to do one day for us all. Proof of what He’s willing to do to set things right. In thinking of this and the other 37 recorded miracles of Christ in the gospels, what else do we know that God wants – is willing to do – will one day do for us all?
