Rue & Jules: Talking "Euphoria" and That All-Consuming First Love
Manage episode 313417304 series 3269995
HBO’s Euphoria made us terrified of teenagers, tempted to put glitter on our face and traumatized by the memory of how hard it is to be in love for the first time. Among other things, Rue and Jules grapple with addiction, depression, bigotry, violence, and manipulation… plus they have a shitty prom. However, at the core of their relationship, they are two teens navigating their first queer relationship and the enormity of their first love.
In this episode, I’m joined by my longtime friend Em St. Pierre to discuss their experience of coming out in high school, their first intense Rue/Jules-esque love, how they’ve learned to communicate about the fuzzy lines between queer friendship and romance, and how they empathize with Rue’s lack of language, knowledge, or queer community. We discuss our own big high school loves, how well Rue and Jules work as a couple, and if ultimately, we ‘ship them.
