When Liz Meriwether created the character of Jess for the pilot episode of New Girl, she based much of Jess’s quirky personality on herself. At the time, no specific actress had been envisioned for the role. However, when Zooey Deschanel read the script, she saw something special—and familiar—in the character.
Deschanel realized that she and Jess shared a lot in common, particularly their mutual love of music. This musical connection wasn’t just a happy coincidence—Deschanel herself performed the now-iconic theme song for the show, adding a signature charm to its episodes.
