It has been a few years since 2017 that an Iranian president has visited Russia. Raisi’s visit to Moscow aimed at strengthening political, economic, and military ties with Russia. The visit comes at a time when Iran & major powers, including Russia, are in talks to revive the agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program.
What’s interesting is that China and Russia hedged their bet on supporting Iran during the latter’s nuclear negotiations with major powers (China, Russia, the UK, the US, and France plus Germany, known as the P5+1). It is evident to me that China and Russia are not only reaping the benefit for that support, but also deciding on the political and economic trajectories of the Middle East for the foreseeable future. This role was played by the United States and Saudi Arabia in the recent past—not anymore!
