We're going to learn about Adam Clayton Powell Jr. He was the first African-American to be elected to Congress from New York, as well as the first from any state in the Northeastern U.S. Powell represented the Harlem neighborhood of New York City in the House of Representatives from 1945 until 1971. He served as a national spokesman on civil rights and social issues. Powell also urged the U.S. to support emerging nations in Africa and Asia. You will hear the story of his life in a 1949 episode of Destination Freedom, plus Adam Clayton Powell in his own words from a 1961 edition of Meet the Press on NBC Radio.
