I recently had the pleasure of meeting Jean Trimbach of Maison F.E. Trimbach in Alsace, France at Bistrot Lepic in Washington, DC. During our IMG_3802interview (audio below) we talked about the history of this famed wine estate, the style of his wines and why he believes these wine should be on your dinner table.

Jean is part of the 12th generation of Trimbachs to make wine from these classified vineyards since 1626. Pierre Trimbach (Jean’s brother) is the winemaker who focuses his effort on making wine in the tradition that was handed down to him from generation to generation. Following our interview I got taste through the line of wines which focus heavily on Riesling (40% or production) but also includes Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir.

Two outstanding wines are made that regularly garner praise from critics and wine collectors alike. The first is the Clos Ste. Hune which some call the DRC of Alsace and the Cuvee Frederic Emile which is made from Grand Cru vineyards. Blessed with ideal wine growing climate Alsace is drier than Burgundy or Champagne with only 550mm of rain per year.

Jean commented at lunch that he sees lots of growth potential for his brand in the US as well as Asia. Jean Said, “Asian food and Trimbach is Rock & Roll!” Well if Trimbach is Rock & Roll I say turn up the volume and enjoy these world class wines!
