In this episode, I'm talking with Rick Terrien, a lifelong entrepreneur whose current focus is the creation of a non-profit organisation - The Center for Ageless Entrepreneurs.

Rick has entrepreneurship in his blood although, as he says, that wasn't a word he used when he first started, which was at the age of 15. His first proper business was started out of his dorm room at college, which he then sold when he was 25. He even designed his course at university around his desire to boost his entrepreneurship journey

When he sold his next business, he was 45 and realised that things had changed. He found that he was being dismissed merely because of his age. It seemed incredible to him that businesses and society were ignoring these people who all held two massive assets.

Experience and networks

Things have changed in recent years but still not enough. Did you know that the majority of startups in the last couple of years have been launched by people who are over 45 – and yet most of the support is targeted at those who are around 20?

Rick put his learnings down into a book entitled “Ageless Startup: Start a Business at Any Age” and launched the aforementioned centre to give support and opportunities to those who are in their 'Apex Years'.

In our conversation, we cover such topics as:

1) the importance of being a small business owner in today's society;

2) where to look for a business idea; and

3) why there's nothing wrong with staying small

He also shares the concept of phased retirement, where companies collaborate with those approaching the later years to start up a new business and benefit from the wisdom they gain in the process.
