Dichotomy of Control

In the first episode of THE WILD GERMAN STOIC we will talk about a fundamental stoic idea: the so called "Dichotomy of control". "Dichotomy" simply means consisting of two parts, and "control", well, we all know what that is.

Control – is it an illusion?

The Dichotomy of Control asks a very important question, "can you (really) control it?"

So, let's aks ourselves if we can control our fellow human beings, ourselves, our lives. The answer, we quickly realise, is, no, we cannot really control people and things. We could call these "external factors".

The Dichotomy of Control is a complete reframing of how we look at the world

As normal humans in the modern West we quickly learn, that it "makes sense" (spoiler: it doesn't …) to blame other people, circumstances, or even something called "luck" if things go wrong. This is kind of funny because we all know that people almost never say or do the things we wish they would. And the things happening to us are only very rarely exactly what we hoped they would be. Computers freeze in the middle of some important work, your spouse disagrees, your children misbehave, your car won't start, the television has a malfunction and so on. This is normal life. More or less completely out of our control.

Influence is possible, control not

Yes, we can influence our life and the people around us to a certain extent, but that's not really "controlling them". We can take care of our health, our relationships, and our career. Does that mean that everything will turn out the way we planned it? No.

Our reaction to events is the most important thing

There is one thing though, we are fully in control of and that is our thoughts and feelings. It is the way we react to events and people and even to our own stupidity and bad decisions. It is the only thing we should really care about, it is the thing we should work with. At least if we want to lead a much happier life in the future.
