The Origin of Love (1 John 4:7-16)

The Apostle John wrote on the Origin of love for the Christian’s benefit. He issued a command for Christians to unselfishly demonstrate God’s love to one another.

Many people on Earth recognize love. Unbelievers do not acknowledge that love is from God.

Everyone who loves others is born of God and knows God through personal experience. This love is expressed when an unregenerate person trusts in Jesus Christ alone for salvation and is converted. The regenerate person loves God, loves others, as they love themselves. 2 Corinthians 5:16-21; 1 John 3:16-19

The universal truth is a person who does not love does not know God. That one does not and never did know God.

God is love. God’s love is unlimited, it knows no boundaries, measurements, or exceptions. It is inherent to His nature; since He is infinite, His love is also infinite.

God’s love was manifested toward us, in that God sent His One and only begotten Son, Jesus, into the world so that we might live through Him. Salvation is the complete and unified work of all three Persons of the Trinity. John 3:16-18

The incarnation represents God’s ultimate expression of love, therefore, anyone who denies that Jesus came in the flesh, rejects God’s love. Galatians 4:4-7

God loved us first. God took the initiative to invite us into a personal love relationship with Him. He made the way to know and love Him. Romans 5:8
God is unseen by man, but He can be personally known. The Holy Spirt is our Witness whereby we can know God the Father. When we have the Holy Spirit living within us we have the ability to express the love of God to others. 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

We, like John, must have unwavering faith in and to Jesus Christ our Savior.

Understanding and experiencing God’s love inspires Believer’s to live life with holy boldness. Knowing Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross reflects not only God’s love but also His holiness and justice. Jesus demonstrated how seriously God views sin. His just penalty for sin was poured out on Christ while, in His boundless love, offered His Son for our transgressions. What an amazing God we serve!
