This week on #TubtaNabadda, marking World Environment Day which was celebrated on 5 June, we discuss the importance of protecting the environment in Somalia. In the episode’s first segment, we hear from the UN Environmental Advisor to Somalia, Chris Hodder, who tells us about the most pressing environmental challenges currently being faced in Somalia. He touches upon how these issues are impacting the country’s ecosystem and communities, and discusses ways in which the United Nations and the Somali government collaborate to support environmental conservation efforts. In the second segment, we talk with a Somali environmentalist, Hassan Yasin Warsame, who also heads a local environmental organisation, the Somali Greenpeace Association. He shares practical strategies for local communities, particularly youth, to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts in the coming years. He also talks with us about the impact of government policies on the environmental situation in the country. The programme is presented in Somali by Faiza Abdi and Mohamed Salad.
