Joseph Pujol was born on the 1st of June 1857 in Marseilles, France. His stage name was 'Le Petomane’ a combination of the French verb péter, meaning "to fart" with the suffix “mane” meaning “maniac” creating a literal translation of “fartomaniac”, also known as a Flatulist or Fartiste.
Joseph Pujol died in 1945, aged 88, and left behind an enduring legacy and inspired countless books, musicals, plays, songs and films.
