Ep94 How to recover when your joke falls flat and why getting a TedX Talk isn't what it used to be, with Brenden Kumarasamy Part 2
Manage episode 354385690 series 2814284
How do comedians wing it all the time? They don't (!) and their process for getting so good on the stage can help us all become better communicators and public speakers. This includes how to recover when your joke falls flat and how to be remembered as being funny, even when you were mostly not.
Brenden Kumarasamy faced numerous obstacles as a child. Growing up in Montreal, he was required to speak a language he was unfamiliar with, and a cricket arm surgery put him at a disadvantage socially. Through repetition, motivation, and learning how to manage his fears, Brenden developed into a confident communicator and was able to help others do the same. The founder of MasterTalk, he was the world's youngest public speaking coach and currently has more than 30,000 YouTube subscribers.
Quotes from this episode:
"Years ago when I started guesting on podcasts, I sucked. (But) I would write down the answer to one question that I thought the world would ask me... And if I do that every day for a year... I'll be bulletproof."
"If I don't do a great job at podcasts, I might lose a follower, it's not the end of the world. But if Scott Harrison (CEO of Charity Water) misses an appearance and doesn't do well, people die."
