Wishes...wants...hopes...all various ways of expressing desires.
I wish I could live in Paris. I want to live in Paris. I hope to live in Paris someday.
They all sort of mean the same thing, but each one is a little bit different.
Today we'll practice with hope.
1) I hope you’ll come by tomorrow.
2) After failing his Russian exam, he started to give up hope of ever learning the language. It was just too difficult.
3) I have high hopes of getting a better job next year.
4) We say that “Hope springs eternal.”
5) The doctor held out little hope for the man’s recovery.
6) We hope to see you again very soon.
7) John lives in hope of winning the lottery. I wish I had all the money he’s thrown away!
8) I don’t have a hope in hell of winning the New York marathon.
9) He doesn’t have a snowball’s hope in hell of winning the election.
10) We’re all hoping for the best, but she should have gotten vaccinated.
11) My boss is hopeless. He never listens to anyone and his own ideas are terrible.
12) I’m waiting for an important phone call from my dad. I hope he’ll call soon.
13) While there’s life, there’s hope.
14) We’re hoping for good weather next weekend.
15) My parents are hoping to arrive in the afternoon.
16) He says he hopes to win the next marathon he runs.
17) My dog is always hoping for more food.
18) We hope the new house will be finished in two more months.
19) Parents always hope for good reports from their childrens’ teachers.
20) You should hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
21) I hope Mary finds her purse soon. It’s been missing for three days.
22) John is hoping to become a doctor someday.
23) We hope you will accept our dinner invitation.
24) She hopes to have a large family but her husband isn’t so sure they can afford five children.
25) What do you hope to find in Egypt? Mummies? Tombs? Buried treasure?
