From hating her body and putting it through hell to appreciating it and being grateful for it.
Manage episode 343937930 series 3289061
Some of Amanda Hallam's earliest memories are of hating her body. She developed orthorexia and then anorexia as a young teen. In college, she became a binge eater. For years she would find herself relapsing into any one of the three disorders in times of stress, change, or negative body image.
She considers herself recovered now. Amanda eats mindfully and intuitively and uses food and movement to manage her depression and anxiety (She has been completely off of medication for 4 years now). She meditates regularly and became a Reiki practitioner because energy healing was so important in her journey.
Amanda's mission is to change conversations about eating, body image, and mental health. she believes that by interrupting the generational narratives, we can create better lives for children and teens so that they don't have to experience the same struggles that she and so many others had.
Her message is that no matter how far away body acceptance and love may seem, it is possible for everyone!
Amanda talks about the concept of body neutrality, which is a bridge out of negative body image when body positivity feels too far away and encourages you to focus on what your bodies can do, rather than just what they look like.
