In his role as President of the UK National Football Association Prince William has condemned as ‘despicable’ the on-going racist abuse that has been directed at football players in the UK, including against the young Manchester United player Marcus Rashford.

Marcus Rashford is an icon to many both on and off the football pitch. Off the soccer pitch, Rashford has been butting heads with the UK Government to force them to provide free school meals for children living in low-income families, and putting his money where his mouth is, in donating a lot of his time and money to this worthy cause. The 22-year football player was awarded an MBE by the Queen for his work fighting child food poverty.

Rashford described the abuse that he received as being "humanity and social media at its worst.”

In a series of tweets Williams said that racist abuse, whether on the pitch, in the stands, or on social media, is despicable and it must stop now.

Many sports personalities are calling on the authorities and on social media companies to identify the perpetrators, with some sportsmen and women saying people are energized to post abuse because not enough is being done to stop them.

Facebook has opened it own investigation into the abuse that Marcus Rashford received and they took steps to remove accounts and comments. Twitter issued a statement to say that racist behaviour has no place on their service.

As we know William’s brother Prince Harry has been very vocal about his thoughts on how social media is in crises. Harry has been pillared in the press for doing so, accused of trying to restrict freedom of speech, whereas the UK press has been largely supportive of Prince William for making the exact same comments.

This might be an area where Harry and William can be persuaded to work together and use the power of their combined voices to fight against hate speech on social media. It would be great to see them both fighting side by side on this issue. Might this be a way for them to reconnect with each other in an impactful way?
