EPISODE 487 - Kate Kennedy Author of Once Upon a School, building a school to serve children without housing I am a mom, a wife, a sister, and a daughter. I am a visionary and a dreamer of big dreams. I am a writer and a theology nerd. I am passionate about empowering others to share their stories through the sharing of my own. My study and research interests include identifying the places where the church meets the world and gathering the beautiful tapestry of stories that live quietly in our community. I began my professional career as a Writer/Producer for Turner Network Television before transitioning into a career in service and ministry. I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wake Forest University and a Master of Religion and Public Life degree from Emory University. I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry at Pittsburgh Theological Seminar with a particular focus in Creative Writing and Public Theology. In 2018, I founded and led a tuition-free private school for children experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. We began with 9 young scholars and now serve over 60 scholars. The journey to begin this change-making organization is a pivotal part of my story. About the Book What do you do when you see something you can’t ignore? That’s what happened to Kate Kennedy one day as she drove down the Courtland Street corridor in Atlanta, Georgia. After that day, she could not look away. Once Upon a School shares the story of a stay-at-home mom of four who ignited a wave of community change by building a school to serve children without housing. One dollar and one day at a time, Kate pushed against all odds to build a program that cares for the most vulnerable children. In the process, she learned more about herself than she ever imagined . . . even when it all began to fall apart. With humor and vulnerability, Kate shares the story of challenging the status quo and digging deep into her own story to find connection, hope, and new answers to old problems. Once Upon a School is a story of racial inequity, generational poverty, and finding community in the most unlikely places. It’s about building a school, standing up for children, and finding your place in the world. As the story unfolds, Kate invites readers to challenge themselves and their own communities through the lenses of social impact, personal growth, and theology. Once Upon a School is about daring to dream big and learning to bounce back. This journey reminds us, writes Kate, that “we all have the capacity to make lasting community change in our own unique ways if we can find the strength and courage to take the first step and keep on walking.” https://www.katekennedywrites.com/ ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks! https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca…

EPISODE 486 - Steve MacBeth - No Names No Pack Drill - An Oral History of Canadians at War in Afghanistan Steve MacBeth, a three-tour Afghan war veteran, offers a compelling, first-hand account of Canada’s involvement in one of the most protracted and most complex conflicts of the 21st century. Through vivid and unfiltered interviews with 150 frontline soldiers, this collection captures the diverse experiences of those who served. These soldiers share their stories from the front lines of Afghanistan, detailing the challenges, sacrifices, and moments of camaraderie they encountered. The title, inspired by the military expression "no names, no pack drill"—intended to ensure lessons are learned from soldiers' experiences without identifying those involved—reflects the humility and quiet professionalism of the Canadian soldiers, who are culturally uncomfortable with recognition for their service. From harrowing combat operations to the calmer, often overlooked aspects of deployment, these personal stories provide a raw and intimate portrait of the war. Shared from one veteran to another, these stories are told using the soldier’s vernacular, ensuring that the voices were genuine. This book is not about building discourse on Canada’s strategy in Afghanistan. It leaves complex political discussions behind. It does not try to put the experiences into context or explain who was right or wrong or whether the tactical decisions made were good or bad. It strips the events down to their rawest form and shares them in the words of those who lived in Canada’s experience in Afghanistan. The work bears witness to the experiences of the average soldier and provides a historical first-person record for future generations. This gripping collection reveals the untold human side of modern warfare, shedding light on its profound impact on those who served. https://a.co/d/0bNyKLB https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-macbeth-364aa7156/ ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks! https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca…

EPISODE 485 - Wendy Dale - Memoir Writing for Geniuses, Peru and Grandma's Pies About Wendy Dale "Wendy is the best instructor I've had, bar none. She continually pushes you and never lets you settle for good enough. She is knowledgeable, patient, helpful, and has an excellent sense of humor! I would take a class again with her anytime." -- Sandra Carpenter "Wendy is phenomenal! I've taken dozens of writing courses and completed an MFA in creative writing. Never have I received such useful instruction. I'm happy that I'll be starting her advanced course next week." -- Mary Rowland "Wendy exceeded my expectations. I was stunned by how much practical information I learned and by how much I grew as a writer. The class was, in a word, invaluable!" -- Carly Van Thomme "Wendy encourages her students to dig deeper -- and the results show. I highly recommend her. She is insightful, conscientious, and supportive. I couldn't ask for more." -- Michele Meek "Wendy is that tough critic who can be the best thing that happens to your manuscript." -- Lucey Bowen Acclaim for Wendy's memoir "Deeply funny." – Vogue Magazine "Wry, funny." – Outside Magazine "Mix David Sedaris, Lucille Ball, and a fifth of tequila in a blender [and] you get Wendy Dale, who is quite possibly the funniest travel writer since Homer. But strain off the foamy giggles and you’re left with a raw, smart, and passionate woman in search of herself and awestruck at the beauty of even the ugliest corners of the earth." – Deborah C. Kogan, author of Shutterbabe" "Dale has an amazing ability not only to find intrigue and drama and hardship but to meet them all with an undampened sense of humor and a roving eye for the absurd. And by getting entangled in other people’s lives, as opposed to hiking through rain forests, she enjoys glimpses into worlds forever closed to the average tourist. A few years ago, Janet Malcolm, writing in the New Yorker, complained that she ‘always found travel writing a little boring’ because ‘travel itself is a low-key emotional experience, a pallid affair in comparison with ordinary life’ … which is absolutely true, unless you travel like Wendy Dale." – Thomas Swick, travel editor of the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel "This is a wonderful book – not a subversive treatise on rule-breaking as the title might suggest, but a witty, insightful memoir of a young woman from an offbeat, though well-traveled family." – Bookpage "With grace, charm and abundant humor, Dale narrates her meandering story of a childhood regained, ‘a chance to make rash decisions, to take wild risks, to lose everything knowing I’d still have plenty of time to earn it all back.’" – Time Out New York "Funny, impulsive, and alluringly naïve, Wendy Dale is repeatedly swept into adventure and trouble and love, mostly when she’s looking the other way. I had a great time going along on her wacky journey. I read the book in one sitting, reluctantly getting up midway to make a sandwich, placing the open book on the counter so I didn’t have to stop reading." – Rita Golden Gelman, author of Tales of a Female Nomad https://www.geniusmemoirwriting.com/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks! https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca…

The family flees to America to mend, but encounters only more turmoil that threatens to tear the family apart. In the wake of the 1967 Six Day War, Tamar Abadi’s world collapses when her sister-in-law is killed in what appears to be a terror attack but what is really the result of a secret relationship with a Palestinian poet. Tamar’s husband, Salim, is an Arab and a Jew. Torn between the two identities, and mourning his sister’s death, he uproots the family and moves them to the US. As Tamar struggles to maintain the integrity of the family’s Jewish Israeli identity against the backdrop of the American “melting pot” culture, a Palestinian family moves into the apartment upstairs and she is forced to reckon with her narrow thinking as her daughter falls in love with the Palestinian son. Fearing history will repeat itself, Tamar's determination to separate the two sets into motion a series of events that have the power to destroy her relationship with her daughter, her marriage, and the family she has worked so hard to protect. This powerful debut novel explores Tamar’s struggle to keep her family intact, to accept love that is taboo, and grapples with how exile forces us to reshape our identity in ways we could not imagine. https://www.zeevabukai.com/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks! https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca…

Episode 481 - Grinelle Buzz Desjarlais - Saving KC, exploring the human condition through the lens of addiction The new re-released edition of “Saving KC” by Grinell “Buzz” Desjarlais offers readers a unique experience by presenting two alternate endings, allowing them to choose between a hopeful conclusion or a more somber, thought-provoking one. This historical fiction novel, set against the backdrop of post-Vietnam America, delves into the complexities of addiction, recovery, and redemption. The book releases on September 17, 2024, under Classic Day Publishing/Peanut Butter Publishing and is available on Amazon in hardcopy, e-book, and audiobook formats. To celebrate the launch, Desjarlais will appear as a guest of Books That Make You at the exclusive DPA Pre- Awards Gifting Suite in Los Angeles. His signing and gifting takes place Friday, September 13, 2024, at the Luxe Hotel. There, he will sign copies of his book for celebrities and attendees of the high-profile Hollywood gifting party. “Saving KC” explores the human condition through the lens of addiction and the quest for personal salvation. Desjarlais, who comes from a long line of Native American creatives, brings a deeply personal narrative to life, reflecting his own experiences through fictional storytelling. “In ‘Saving KC,’ I explore the delicate balance between saving others and saving oneself—a journey many of us walk every day,” says Grinell “Buzz” Desjarlais. The historical fiction book is set in a time when America was grappling with the aftershocks of the Vietnam War. It tells the story of characters who struggle with their demons and search for redemption in a world that often feels unforgiving. The new edition of “Saving KC” is groundbreaking in that it offers readers a choice in how the story concludes. Desjarlais wanted to give his audience the ability to engage more deeply with the narrative by allowing them to determine the fate of the characters. This innovative approach to storytelling invites readers to reflect on the themes of the book and decide whether they prefer a story of hope or one that challenges them with a more realistic, albeit somber, conclusion. “Life doesn’t always offer us choices in the outcomes we face, but in literature, we can imagine anything. Creating a book with two endings provides readers with their choice between comforting happiness, or a jolt of reality, depending on their preference,” Elliott Wolf, President of Classic Day Publishing/Peanut Butter Publishing, explains. “Saving KC” is available on Amazon and from other retailers. Hardcopy, e-book, and audiobook versions will be available. The publisher is Classic Day Publishing, an imprint of Peanut Butter Press. The new, dual-ending edition will be available by September 17, 2024. https://www.savingkcthestory.com/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks! https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca…

BONUS - Book Suggestion For January 2025 - Mel Robbins - The Let Them Theory Mel Robbins' latest book, "The Let Them Theory," offers a refreshingly simple yet powerful approach to personal growth and empowerment. At its core, the book revolves around two words: "Let Them," which Robbins presents as a transformative tool for reclaiming control over one's life Key Concepts The central premise of "The Let Them Theory" is that by relinquishing the need to control others' perceptions, actions, and feelings, individuals can significantly enhance their own well-being and relationships. Robbins argues that many of our frustrations and limitations stem from giving too much power to external factors and other people's opinions Structure and Content Robbins breaks down her theory into eight key areas of life where it can be applied for maximum impact Throughout the book, she employs a blend of: Relatable personal anecdotes Practical advice Scientific research Insights from experts in psychology, neuroscience, and relationships This multi-faceted approach helps readers understand and implement the "Let Them" philosophy in various aspects of their lives. Writing Style Written in Robbins' characteristic no-nonsense style, the book is designed to be easily digestible and actionable Her straightforward approach may seem overly simplistic to some, but Robbins embraces this simplicity, arguing that complicated solutions are often less effective Impact and Application "The Let Them Theory" aims to help readers: Stop wasting energy on uncontrollable factors Break free from self-doubt and fear Build stronger relationships Pursue personal goals with confidence Develop resilience against everyday stressors "The Let Them Theory" is a valuable addition to the self-help genre, offering a simple yet potentially life-changing tool for personal empowerment. Episode 474 - Lily Iona MacKenzie - Dreaming Myself into Old Age, One Woman's Search for Meaning I don’t have hayseed clinging to my trousers, but growing up on a Canadian farm gave me a unique foundation as a writer. I sprouted under cumulous clouds that bloomed everywhere in Alberta’s big sky. They were my first creative writing instructors, scudding across the heavenly blue, constantly changing shape: one minute an elephant, bruised and brooding. The next morphing into a rabbit or a castle. These billowing masses gave me a unique view of life on earth. As a girl, I prowled the land, talking to chickens and pigs and lambs, creating scenarios for them. I also tried to make perfume from the wild Alberta roses and captured caterpillars, watching with wonder when they transformed themselves into butterflies. Everything around me seemed infused by nature spirits waiting to be released. I soon realized that all objects are in motion, waiting for stories to illuminate them. The clouds’ shifting form also schooled me in the various possibilities open to me as a writer. So did Jack Frost’s enchanted creations that enlivened the windows in wintertime, forcing me to view my surroundings as if through a bewitching prism. These early experiences helped me to envision multi-dimensional characters. No wonder magical realism pulses at the heart of my narratives, and my work celebrates the imagination. As an adult, I continue to seek instruction from clouds. Just as they provide the earth with much-needed water, I believe that stories have a similar function, preparing the mind to receive new ideas. Also, conditions inside a cloud are not static—water droplets are constantly forming and re-evaporating. Stories, too, change, depending on who is reading them, each one giving life to its readers. I’ve published reviews, interviews, short fiction, poetry, travel pieces, essays, and memoir in over 165 American and Canadian venues. Fling! , one of my novels, was published in July 2015 by Pen-L Publishing. Regal House Publishing released Curva Peligrosa , another novel, in September 2017. Pen-L Publishing published Freefall: A Divine Comedy on 1/1/19. The Ripening: A Canadian Girl Grows Up! , featuring the same main character as in Freefall, came out on October 2021. My poetry collection All This was published in 2011, and a chapbook ( No More Kings ) was released in March 2020. Shanti Arts Publishing will release my hybrid memoir Dreaming Myself into Old Age: One Woman’s Search for Meaning in 2023 as well as my new poetry collection California Dreaming . I also taught writing at the University of San Francisco (USF) for over 30 years and was vice-president of USF’s part-time faculty union. I currently teach creative writing at USF’s Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning. https://lilyionamackenzie.com/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks! https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca…

Episode 461 - Susan E. Schwartz, Ph.D. - A licensed clinical psychologist, Jungian Analytical Psychology Susan E. Schwartz, Ph.D. is a Jungian analyst educated in Zurich, Switzerland and is a licensed clinical psychologist. For many years Susan has been giving workshops and presentations at numerous local, national, community and professional organizations, and lectures worldwide on various aspects of Jungian analytical psychology. She has written several journal articles and book chapters on daughters and fathers, Puella, Sylvia Plath and has co-authored a couple of books. She is a member of the International Association of Analytical Psychology and the American Psychological Association. Susan maintains a private practice in Paradise Valley, Arizona serving people in the greater Phoenix area, Tuscon, Prescott and Cottonwood, West Valley, Scottsdale and Tempe. Jungian Analytical Psychology Each of us harbors within our inner universe a number of characters, parts of ourselves that can cause conflict and distress when not understood. We seem to be relatively unacquainted with these players and their roles and yet they are constantly seeking a stage on which to perform their tragedies and comedies personally, relationally and collectively. A life challenge, crisis or change of any form may feel overwhelming and leave us bewildered, confused, even shattered. The current world with its uncertainty can make us feel isolated and confused. How we coped before works no longer and the former attitudes, beliefs or ways we perceived ourselves are now proving inadequate. The problems reflect what is discordant and unassimilated in our personality. Paradoxically, these very obstacles can also become the incentives and openings to development. The approach of Jungian Analytical Psychology addresses a broad range of emotional and relational situations and conflicts in the service of psychological growth. At the heart of the Jungian process is a realignment of conscious and unconscious energies so the psyche gains balance. Jungian Analytical Psychology is very much experience driven, keeping one foot in the outer world and the other in the realm of dreams, synchronistic events, fantasies, and symbols. Knowing oneself entails a journey so the unconscious, repressed or unknown elements are released, not merely for symptom relief but to transform and become concious. The psychological work involves connecting the past and the present, personal and collective, spiritual and mundane, and thereby creating an embodied and meaningful life. This is a process that is individual and collective, personal and relational and the work occurs in a sensitive and therapeutic atmosphere oriented to becoming all one is meant to be. https://susanschwartzphd.com/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks! https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca…
