This interview is with Chad Reynolds, who was 42 when we conducted this interview. He lost his father when he was thirteen years old. We met in Columbus, Ohio on a humid, Sunday, summer afternoon. I learned a lot from Chad and how he understood his father's mental illness. Our conversation inspired me to visit my father's grave in Kansas, which I was trying to avoid. This episode features Franklin James Cook, who is a professional grief coach and facilitator of bereavement groups for people who've lost a loved one to suicide. We met in his living room, surrounded by full, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, just outside of Boston. He was generous with his time and full of insights that helped me rethink how I understood my father's illness, pain, and death. The photo is of Franklin's hand with his father's wedding ring on it. In this episode you'll hear about how my bike breaks down while visiting friends in Maine, how I start to fall in love and share a first kiss on a ferris wheel, and how I join a crew to sail around on a schooner baking pies for a group of elderly knitters while I wait for my bike parts to be delivered. I met with Mike on the floor of his kids' bedroom in Brooklyn. He only had 45 minutes, but in that time he totally recalibrated how I understood forgiveness. This was one of the most important and moving conversations that I was afforded during the year-long project. The photo is of Mike holding an inscribed gift from his father, a book on Adlai E. STevenson's campaign speeches. Mike was 36 at the time of our interview, and lost his father when he was 29.
