In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. What is the Gayatri Mantra? Where did it come from? Who made it? Why is the Gayatri Mantra so rad? Episode 80 is a deep dive into my history and experience with this miraculous prayer. The second half of the talk is the origin story of the Gayatri Mantra - a compelling tale of the sage Vishwamrita and his transformation from a not-so-cool warrior king into a full-blown Brahma Rishi. This episode is the first I have recorded and filmed at the same time. So pardon if I get a bit distracted at times, this was new to me - looking at my face while talking. Or actually trying not to look at my face while talking. Also please pardon the interruption about 3/4 of the way through. An Amazon delivery showed up during a particularly gripping part of the story, so I paused the video. Enough apologies, I hope you enjoy the episode. Today’s episode is about a remarkable conversation I had with a truly remarkable man named Alex. Alex has been a minimalist nomad (or what many would call “homeless”) since undergoing a series of profound psychedelic experiences in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district in 1968. This was one of those conversations you are blessed to have which leave such an impression that you can’t help but share it with whomever might listen. So listen up, thanks for tuning in, and as Alex did…. Dropping out……

Episode 76: In this show, I share the biography of a Spiritual Master from India whose name kept popping into my head inexplicably on what I later discovered was his birthday. The sage's name is Upasani Maharaj, and he is one of the most hard core tough-ass Gurus I've ever come across. It is my hope that this story inspires you, as it has me, to embrace the suck, lean into discomfort, and shy not from pain, for as we know, this is where the real growth happens. miraclesoup.substack.com Be As It May - Upasani Maharaj I always used to beg with a broken earthen pot and eat from it, drink from it. I used to roam about naked I used to lie by a dust div and used a few rags to cover myself. People used to take me to be a madman but remember unless you become mad cannot obtain godhood. Forbearance to its maximum means the attainment of the original Forbearance to its maximum. Sometimes one gets crumbs of bread while some other time one gets to eat nice sweet things. While at other times one has to fast. That is how things happen. One should allow things to happen. One should follow: Be as it may. yes man whatever comes up should be accepted Go ahead. It is always better to have pain to suffer If you suffer with pleasure you will get plenty of pleasure. Whosoever wants to be happy has to suffer for it first. That is why I tell everybody that comes here that they should not mind pain. They should patiently bear it, suffer it even with pleasure. They should never try for pleasure or happiness. They should always remain content with whatever they have. The most important mantra of mine is: Be as it may. I've been constantly saying that everything has two aspects, night is opposed to day and both these opposites together constitute a whole day. Nothing can change it. In the same way pleasure is always associated with pain. If you want pleasure you are bound to have pain. As well if you can accept pain with pleasure it leads you to infinite God. This Siddhanta. This is way. Forbearance to its maximum, After all God is real. Honor, evolve, And if he chooses to take away all or anything from it no you can’t you prevent him. Be as it may.…

A few Miracle Soup fans have asked me lately about Substack and how it all works. Instead of actually talking to them in person (which is so outdated I know), I decided to create a digital mini-course to go into more nuanced and caffeinated detail about: What is Substack? Why is it worth your time to use? How do I start a Substack? How do I get subscribers? How to I create stuff, and do it consistently? Substack/ Social Media ediquette? Substack/Social Media as a spiritual practice And, as always, much much more. It is my humble opinion that the number one reason people do not change is a lack of kindness to themselves. So often we get inspired and motivated to create a project, start an exercise regimen, lose weight, or whatever the case may be. After a few days of success, we inevitably revert back to old behaviors and habits. This is where many of us call in the heavy hitters of self-flagellation. We often beat the crap out of ourselves for not being perfect. Today I expound upon the virtue of "failing forward", where we instead give ourselves love and compassion, understanding that learning is by its nature, a series of many many failures. If we're failing, we're basically on the right track. There's so much potential to grow into the higher versions of ourselves, to grow into the higher potentials of our collective society and species, but it gets thwarted with criticism, self-blame, harshing on our attempts to improve. Failing forward is a crucial tool to ensure the transformation we seek in ourselves and as a community of amazing Earthlings. The way the Miracle Soup podcast works is I ask myself “What do I need to hear today?” Then I hit the record button and watch what happens. When I have a guest on, that’s also selfishly motivated. I invite guests whose brains I am interested in picking into. I ask questions that I am curious about, for my own sake. If other’s get some value out of that, I am overjoyed. If not, well then I know at least one person benefited, and that's me. This may seem selfish, but that is what I am discovering about the creative process. If we create to please others or impress, then it kills the creative pulse and creates more garbage. It’s the creative’s job to eliminate garbage and learn to make something real. But even garbage is ok, because that stuff will break down to make compost for more creativity. I hesitated to publish today’s podcast, worried about what others may think. Do I sound like a fake? Is what I’m saying bad advice? Is it regurgitated BS? But another thing I’ve discovered about creative offerings is that often what I judge to be garbage is actually gold for somebody else. It’s really not up to me to judge what comes through. Before hitting the record button on today’s episode, I took some deep breaths and offered a prayer to the great Mystery to help me craft a show. The response I got was “Press record and see what happens.” This episode is what happened. Topics for today’s offering include: -Meeting Kyle Cease -The problem with job benefits and so-called “security” -Why I’d rather hang out with Rumi -Great book recommendation “The Illusion of Money” by Kyle Cease -Learning a lifestyle inventory number system that lit a fire under my ass -A good old fashioned rant In case you haven’t yet, you can leave comments and enter another level of the Soup by visiting and subscribing at substack.miraclesoup.com. This one was recorded in a small cob hut/sauna in the woods. I'm hiding from the world because it has been a challenge to find space and time to record as of late. Nonetheless, I was able to create this episode about the importance of inner authority. Why do we so often do the things others ask/demand/expect of us when our inner voice's promptings go unacted upon? Why do our own ideas, dreams, and visions slip down to the bottom of the priority list? What would happen if that changed? I explore this in the confine of a cob hut in the snow-covered woods today. I hope you enjoy. Checking out the wood engravings, sacred geometries, altar art, and wearables from my Etsy shop will in fact support this program. If one person benefits from your art then you have succeeded. Doesn't matter if 100 people hate what you made, one person benefited. You crushed it. 2. go ahead and make the worst thing. Get over your judgments and make the worst recording, the worst article, the worst video, hey I actively allowed myself to make the worst podcast today. I haven’t had to crack open a book for the last week or so because she has been so enthralled with my renditions of certain Bible stories. “Can I hear Shedrack, Mesheck and Abendigo again daddy?” I’m getting pretty good at that one. Last night was the fourth or fifth time I told it to her. And each time I add more little embellishments that the story seems to want me to tell. I’ve never actually read the story from the bible, but I get the jist. Then, like a good Grateful Dead song transition, I ooze into the story of David and Goliath, or maybe Noah and the Ark. Last night it was Moses parting the Red Sea. I take my time with each story because I don’t know that many to be honest, and I need to make them last. The Moses story ended with the Red Sea crashing in on Pharoh’s army. It was really quite a climax and I was deeply engaged with the excitement. I’m pretty sure Rain fell asleep before this triumphant ending but I sure as the burning bush enjoyed it. (Yes I totally included that part, pulling from my memories of the one time as an 8 year old I saw the 1956 Chariton Heston “The Ten Commandments”). But since Rain was asleep, the stories stopped. I still have Daniel and the Lion’s den, Jonah and the Whale, some New Testement Jesus material, but I had accomplished the task of lulling the child into dreamworld. Good job dad. I then laid back with a smile on my face. I had enjoyed the stories so much myself, as if they had come alive through my telling of them. I had tapped into the living pulse of these stories as they have been told over and over for centuries. How many kids throught the vast history of our time must have said “again! Again! Tell that one again!” I was pleased with the day, grateful for my life, for the gift of having these stories to share, and grateful for the connection Rain and I have in these bed time sagas. Then my mind began to wander. Moses had already parted the red sea, Sherack, Meshack and Abendigo were out of the furnace, Nebuchadnezzar had transformed from an egocentric psycho to a God loving leader. Thus I began noticing the less than fascinating stories running through my head. And dear Lord were they boring. Just boring stories of worries, regrets, going into the past to try and fix it, going into the future to micro-manage and control. Oh my God, forget it. I prefer the stories of Moses and the bible heroes so much more. Shocked by the contrast of the quality of story I was entertaining myself with in my head, I realized I have the power to tell different ones. I have the remote control and can change channels whenever I want. What a relief. When you stop to think of it, you see that stories make up everything. I have a theory that the strings in what is considered string theory in physics is really the stories that create the tapestry of the Universe. Everything is story. “In the beginning was the word” kind of thing. What kinds of stories am I telling myself? What movie am I creating? How hard is to actually change? In case you think you might be losing your shit, here are 3 things that help me maintain some semblance of balance and sanity in my experience. Thanks for tuning in, PEACE
I rush because I want to fit more in, I want more of life to happen. But the reality of it is that when I slow down, intentionally, consciously, and sometimes forcefully, there is so much more that comes to me. In fact it’s already here. Slowing down is entering another dimension, another frequency bandwidth. When I slow down nature can speak to me and give me so much more information. One time I saw a group of Indian indigenous people from the Andes at the local food co-op. Besides the fact that they were wearing beautifully bright rainbow colored clothing and that each one of them couldn’t have been much more than 5 foot two, men and women together, they were walking so slowly. I mean they were on a totally different wavelength. And this was so obvious to see because everyone around them were busily shopping and adhering to strict schedules of modern day, but these gentle people were teaching everybody a lesson as they walked so slowly, so mindfully and with so much reverence for the ground upon which they walked. It said a lot. What are the reasons I rush? Because I think I will miss out, because I think resources will run out and dry up if I don’t get there fast. Because I have a belief that I’m not good enough or not worthy unless I produce and accomplish tasks and work hard. I rush if there’s an uncomfortable feeling or issue that I don’t want to look at an address and be honest with him myself. So I’ll rush to get some thing to distract me from that discomfort. One time I was driving on a horse ranch. I have been asked to keep the speed limit between five and 7 mph because when you’re on a horse ranch your own horse time. And the way the ranch owner said it, this old school hippie cowboy type well into his 70s, "around here we are on horse time." One day I might’ve been doing 10 or maybe even, God forbid 12 mph, I got a call from him. I think he was one of those guys who has animal helpers that telepathically send them visual information because I had no idea how he knew how quick I was moving. Anyway the old dude gave me a earful. Chewed me out good and got me even all shaky. It was a good lesson to slow down. The universe gives me lots of these lessons. In the form of lost keys, lost items, mistakes that could have been averted if I was moving slower. Burn out anxiety depression are also symptoms of over hurrying.…
Funny to think about what actually "belongs" to us. Funny to believe that anything "out there" will actually make us happy. Funny to hold onto negative feelings about someone who took something from us when in reality that thing was never ours in the first place. The Universe simply repurposed it, moved it on to fulfill the plan in a way our small perspective doesn't like. It is so much more valuable to have a peaceful mind and a loving heart then to "get" that thing we think we lost back. I lost $100 and a bike to two people I thought I could trust Two people I care deeply about. But holding that grudge... man costs way more and is a catastrophic negative return on investment. So like the Buddha said it's time to "Let that shit go". I won't lend money or bikes to either of those two again but I'll stop hardening my heart stop letting the past harsh my mellow and I'm even letting myself engage in kind acts and conversation. There's a lot more to it But in the end, it always ALWAYS Seems like love wins.…
