This topic stems from a statement we've all heard at one point in our lives: "you're a natural". While this is a compliment, there is a major flaw in this statement. When you say someone is a 'natural', you're mistaking a learned skill for natural talent. Here's why this is a problem...
(1) When you focus on the effortless outcome, you don't acknowledge the intense effort that goes into the process. (2) When you forget to recognize the hard work, it can lead you feeling discouraged to start from where you are currently.
When you're looking at someone's effortless outcome, you can't see their story of struggle, you can't see their progress, you just see that moment. My friend, please don't only see that outcome and think that they were born with a gift. In reality, that 'gift' probably took them years of refinement and work, and the truth is that they're just further evolved in the process.
The truth is, being on-camera is a skill I've learned, not a talent I was born with.
My hair is naturally red; my camera presence was intentionally built.
What scares me when people call me (or anyone) "a natural" is that they aren't recognizing how long it took me to get here. I have spent HOURS receiving criticism on my delivery, refining my mannerisms, practicing my inflection and so much more. I spent years building my confidence as a professional spokesperson to be able to jump on video, be authentically me, and talk about a topic.
Feel inspired when you watch someone do something that appears effortless but do not mistake their outcome with their efforts. It takes SO much effort to appear effortless.
Feel encouraged to start where you are now. Be willing to accept where you are on your journey. We are all starting from different places. Embrace your story and your journey, it's what makes you stand out!
