Welcome to another episode of Teach & Learn: A podcast for curious educators. In today’s episode, we talk educator burnout. A 2022 Gallup poll reported that K-12 teachers had the highest burnout rate in the United States, followed by college and university workers, making educators among the most burned-out groups in the country.

Mindfulness has been scientifically proven to help lower stress levels and, when practiced consistently, can be an effective way to reduce educator burnout. To discuss the topic further, we welcomed Dr. Michelle C. Chatman, Associate Professor at The University of the District of Columbia and an expert in mindfulness.
Dr. Chatman and Dr. Ford discussed the differences between mindfulness, mindset and contemplative approaches, why educators are burnt out now more than ever, why we should challenge internalized racism, biases and sexism in underrepresented student communities and why teachers shouldn’t underestimate what was lost during the pandemic. Dr. Chatman also offers up a short mindfulness exercise.
