Kevin says Argylle kinda sucks!

It’s not always easy to make a compelling genre film while also deconstructing that genre. Not that Matthew Vaughn doesn’t give it the old college try with his new secret agent comedy ARGYLLE.

The film follows a popular spy novelist and her beloved cat who gets whisked away into the real world of espionage when she learns her books have an uncanny connection to reality.

The movie begins with an absurd premise, then faces an uphill battle as it morphs into silliness and unintentional parody with each predictable twist. At least the cast is strong, led by Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell. Supporting roles with Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson and Henry Cavill offer some much needed stability to the nonsensical storyline.

Like many movies lately, the bloated 2 hour 20 minute running time overstays its welcome, making the film drag between scenes. Even in the action sequences, it never quite reaches the pace or energy level needed for a spy thriller.

ARGYLLE has some fun moments and is certainly passable, but it’s also entirely forgettable.

ARGYLLE gets two and a half cat whiskers out of five. I’m Kevin Carr, and that’s the way I see it.
