We get really confused by the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus gave us the commandments and the Sermon on the Mount, not to earn anything or to try to be "good enough" to get saved but because He saw us like Sheep without a Shepherd and He had radical compassion on us!!!
He knew that going to heaven and being saved was free! Jesus knew it was by grace through faith. He gave us the commandments to protect us from destroying our own lives and the lives of others around us.
But the devil know the best way to demolish our growth in goodness is to try to convince us that we need to "be good enough" for God... to try to earn His forgiveness or earn His friendship with us. It's all "head trash," so throw the trash out!!!
