Text: Proverbs 6:25-35 (ESV)

BEWARE OF FATAL ATTRACTION

The ravages of the sin of adultery are catastrophic results than we realize. It’s started with an attraction. The prostitute woman is a sweet talker, beautiful and tantalizing. But, the truly beautiful woman, is beautiful on the inside, is it not? Prov 31:30 says "beauty is vain." Physical beauty is worth nothing for she lacks godliness. First Peter 3:4 tells women, "Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious."

The prostitute woman will destroy a precious life into just having ‘a loaf of bread’, that is, from fullness to poverty.[v.26] Or, the service of a prostitute is as cheap as buying a loaf of bread but she can cost everything in one’s life. Many naïve men are arrogant to claim that they can handle it by their wit as a boy playing with fire. Thus Solomon asks,

“27 Can a man carry fire next to his chest

and his clothes not be burned?

28 Or can one walk on hot coals

and his feet not be scorched?

29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife;

none who touches her will go unpunished.

The classic example is Samson playing with fire. His adulterous affair with Delilah led to his weakness, defeat, blindness, and humiliation at the end. David’s sin also led to the destruction of his family. An adulterer may think his sin is a secret, as David did, but God sees all and knows all. He has warned, "Be sure your sin will find you out" (Num 32:23).

The evil of adultery is worse when compared with stealing bread for a desperately hungry person. Society typically doesn't hate or persecute a starving thief, does it? However, it’s not tolerated since he may still suffer the consequences when caught. [v.30] The person may die of hunger when he has nothing to eat. But the ‘lust’ of the person does not cost his life if not fulfilled, does it? Therefore, the adulterer has no excuses. That's not a sin of desperation, it's one of lust! According to Lev 20:10, adultery in the nation of Israel was punishable by death. Thus, we read in John 8 about a woman who was caught in the act of adultery, accused by the scribes and the Pharisees stoned to death. Jesus affirmed it.

A person who bargains his life for momentary pleasure of sin lacks sense, that is, he is foolish.

32 He who commits adultery lacks sense;

he who does it destroys himself.

33 He will get wounds and dishonor,

and his disgrace will not be wiped away.

34 For jealousy makes a man furious,

and he will not spare when he takes revenge.

35 He will accept no compensation;

he will refuse though you multiply gifts.

There is an inevitable result of a wounded conscience, heart, and relationship with the Lord. He destroys his reputation and loses, whatever honor and esteem before the people who know him. He has disgraced himself before their eyes, his spouse and children. The wronged spouse can be expected to express furious jealousy. Further, those who choose to take revenge as a result aren't inclined to show mercy.[v.34,35] Moreover, his sinful act can even cause the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme God. Indeed, the ravages of sexual sins are irreparable.
