Text: Proverbs 7:1-5 (ESV)
1 My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;
2 keep my commandments and live;
keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;
3 bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call insight your intimate friend,
5 to keep you from the forbidden woman,
from the adulteress with her smooth words.
DO YOU CHERISH GOD’S WORDS?
Solomon instructs his son to have the right attitudes towards his words. He has to cherish it. In what ways? Firstly, his son must treasure his words. Even, the psalmist testified: "The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces" (Psa 119:72). In the N. T., the apostle Paul counsels us to let Christ's teachings dwell in us richly (Col 3:16). Everything in this world will last but not His words.[Mat 24:35] Do you cherish God’s word like a precious treasure?
Moreover, he must reckon God’s word as essential that can make him live. Did not Jesus say, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God'? (Mat 4:4). We as sinners do receive eternal life by responding in faith to what God's Word says about Jesus. Why? Jesus claims He is the bread of life. He is the Son of God and the only Savior (John 3:36; Rom 10:9–10; 1 Tim 1:15). Also, an abundant life is offered to all who believe on Jesus, is it not? (John 10:10).
Furthermore, he should guard it as protecting the ‘apple of our eye’. This comes from the Hebrew term referring to the pupil - the center of the eye. This is a highly sensitive and extremely valuable part of the body. When a threatening object approaches the eyes, the eyelids close quickly to protect the pupils. We should feel bad when we are deprived of hearing God’s Word.
Lastly, he must embrace his words like a trusted friend or relative. These are the kinds of people we can trust to understand what we are going through in life, are they not? Embracing God’s Words is neither transactional nor dutiful. It’s a pleasure talking to a trusted friend. When we read God’s word, God is talking to us. In short, God’s word is dependable. Keeping God’s word won’t lead us astray. In fact, it will lead us to the right path.
Think for a moment. Do you have the right attitude toward the Word of God? May we will be like Jeremiah, who said,
“ Your words were found, and I ate them,
and your words became to me a joy
and the delight of my heart.”[Jer 15:16]
