Written By Man [Make It Make Sense pt. 4]
Manage episode 386112935 series 2434147
Main Idea: One of the biggest controversies in regard to the Christian faith is the contents and validity of the Bible itself. The statement, “the Bible was just written by man” is a common attack on the sacred texts, and even many believers have felt confused about certain passages of scripture themselves.
Today, we are going to cover a broad scope when it comes to making the Bible make sense. We’re going to start by first examining the accuracy and reliability of the Bible. Then we’re going to look at the use and applicability of the Bible. And at the end, we’re going to unpack the spiritual purpose of the Bible when it comes to our faith and the world.
The reason that this topic is so important to talk about is because many believers are unaware of pertinent information in regards to the very scriptures that they rely on for truth. Not only does it leave their own faith in a vulnerable position, but they are left completely unequipped to handle reasonable discussions about these spiritual writings that they hold so dear to their hearts. People end with arguments and hate instead of edification and redemption. At the end of the day, you should always know why you believe what you believe.
1. Accuracy
[THE BIBLE IS ONE OF THE MOST CONSISTENT AND ACCURATE TRANSCRIPTIONS OF ANCIENT TEXTS]
(2 Timothy 3:16-17)
The first thing to get a grasp on is the fact that the Bible is one of the most consistent and accurate transcriptions of ancient texts in history. While the Bible is a compilation of 66 different books that have over 40 different authors, these different writings were originally scribed over the span of more than a thousand years. With so many factors that could stain its consistency, it doesn’t contradict itself, and in fact has been used to reveal pieces of history and archaeological findings. Its reliability has proven itself time and time again, not only with history, but even with prophecies about future events that came to pass.
2. Applicability
[EVERY PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE SHOULD BE READ WITH THE INTENTION THAT IT WAS WRITTEN FOR]
(Luke 10:25-26)
It can be incredibly dangerous to pull certain scriptures out of context to assert a predetermined idea. Which is why you should do your best to consider the purposes of each book and who the authors were talking to and about in their writings. It is unethical to manipulate and use a stand-alone verse to affirm your own pre-determined philosophy or idea.
3. Accountability
[THE BIBLE IS A TOOL TO HELP GROUND AND GROW YOUR FAITH]
(Hebrews 4:12)
When accepted as an accurate spiritual resource, the Bible is able to be one of the most life giving and powerful tools at your disposal to navigate both your spiritual journey and your secular life while in this world. From parenthood to deep perspectives on morality, it can help you to stay grounded in your spiritual journey and basic walk in life. It is God’s gift to humanity and it’s able to be guiding light amongst confusion. We all have been wrong before, and the Bible helps to give clarity and accountability in both the ordinary and extraordinary moments of our lives. To ignore it in your life would be a disservice to yourself. Reading it doesn’t give your eternal salvation, but it does give you a constant blessing of spiritual nourishment and practical knowledge.
