Susan is an author and researcher who wrote SIDELINED: How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health. Today we will be talking about gender biases of the medical community, why women are misdiagnosed more than men, and why they may delay visiting their doctor or neglect to ask doctors the necessary questions about their own health, ending up in inaccurate treatments or unnecessary procedures.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  1. Why is Sidelined different from other books on women and health?
  2. When creating focus groups, why did you do that specifically and did you learn anything different from the groups in contrast to when you interviewed women individually?
  3. I know the women in my life are much more concerned with health than the men. What do you mean when you say they have trouble getting the most effective healthcare?
  4. How much of a role does stress play in women’s health? Why do you think that is?
  5. You mention that men and women talk to doctors differently. What do you mean by that? And does their conversation style interfere with their diagnosis?
  6. What’s the best way to find the most competent doctors? How should women do their due diligence?
  7. From your research do you find women get better care from a male or a female doctor?
  8. How can women focus their visits so they can get more of what they need?
  9. And so much more!
